Kamal Haasan, Makkal Needhi Maiam (MNM) founder, launched a safety app named ‘Raudram’. The app aimed at ensuring the safety of women in the city. The launch function held at Sri Sairam Engineering College. One can store three contact numbers upon registration in the app.  If the person feels any trouble, she should press the power button thrice within a minute. Once this is done, the emergency contacts, the call centre and the nearby police station will receive an instant alert. The alerts are generated via the mobile net as well as SMS. The app also enables the recording of audio and video footage of the situation and sends it. GPS tracking of the location is part of the comprehensive safety features that the app offers.

The Reserve Bank of India (RBI) approved the appointment of Sandeep Bakhshi as the Managing Director (MD) and Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of ICICI Bank for three years. The approval is against a five-year term sought by ICICI. The appointment will be with effective from October 15. Mr.Bakhshi was elevated from the post of Chief Operating Officer (COO) to MD and CEO after the resignation of Chanda Kochhar on October 4.

The Australian government is to engage actively with Tamil Nadu at the upcoming Global Investors Meet 2019. It is to pursue opportunities in education, road safety technology, urban infrastructure, fisheries and agribusiness. Australian High Commissioner to India Harinder Sidhu launched a roadmap for deepening India-Australia ties over the next two decades.  Australia is set to focus on Andhra Pradesh, Karnataka, Tamil Nadu, Telangana, Maharashtra, Gujarat, West Bengal, Punjab, Delhi and Uttar Pradesh. It is also keen to deepen its research and innovation partnership. Currently, there are 83 active MoUs between Australian universities and educational institutions in Tamil Nadu.

Suraj Panwar Soren won the silver medal in the men’s 5000m race walk event at the Youth Olympic Games, Buenos Aires, Argentina. He opened India’s account in athletics in the third edition. The athletic events were held in two stages. Suraj finished the first stage in 20:23.30s, the second stage in 20:35.87 and won the silver. Ecuador’s Oscar Patin won the first stage in 20:13.69, won the gold after finishing second.  The Youth Olympics’ Asia Area qualification meet in Bangkok in July, Suraj had finished second in the 10,000m race walk behind China’s Xin Wang.

NASA’s Chandra X-ray telescope that suffered technical glitch is back online. Due to the glitch occurred in one of Chandra’s gyroscopes it went into safe mode. Chandra X-ray telescope observes galaxies from the Earth’s orbit.  The team analyzed and completed plans to switch gyroscopes and place the gyroscope that experienced the glitch in reserve. Once configured with a series of pre-tested flight software patches, the team will return Chandra to science operations which are expected to commence by the end of this week.

The Ocean Cleanup Foundation has launched a project to collect the plastic in the middle of the Pacific Ocean. Wilson, a 2,000-foot-long floating pipe has begun its mission to collect the plastic in the middle of the Pacific Ocean. The pipe is constructed in U shape. It features a three-metre-deep net to trap floating plastic under the water’s surface. A boat will visit the spot every few months to remove the debris.

Alembic Pharmaceuticals received a tentative approval from the United States Food and Drug Administration (USFDA), the U.S. health regulator for its Alogliptin tablets. The drug is used for the treatment of type 2 diabetes.  The Alogliptin tablets are made in the strengths of 6.25 mg, 12.5 mg and 25mg. The product is a generic version of Takeda Pharms USA’s Nesina tablets.

Punjab Chief Minister Amarinder Singh laid the foundation stones for five infrastructural projects, worth Rs 127.86 crore, in Amritsar. Out of the total Rs 127.86 crore, Rs 111.56 crore would be borne by the Amritsar Improvement Trust (AIT)with the Railways contributing Rs 16.30 Crore. The projects for which the foundation stones were laid included: ROBs at Vallah Phatak on Amritsar-Delhi Railway line and on Amritsar-Attari section at Khazana Gate, RUB at Jaura Phatak on Amritsar-Delhi section and Amritsar-Pathankot section, and of Flyover at Sant Singh Sukha Singh (SSSS Chowk) on Majitha Road, beside.

Electric autorickshaws are set to be launched in Kerala. A committee of six autorickshaw driver unions signed a pact with a Kinetic Green, a private firm, to roll out 200 Electric autorickshaws in Kochi. These vehicles are expected to be on the road in November. It will primarily operate as feeder services to Kochi metro and buses, providing last-mile connectivity to commuters.  Manufactured by Kinetic Green, each auto can carry four passengers and can attain the speed of up to 35 kmph. It will be fitted with GPS. The autorickshaws will be powered by lithium-ion batteries as it provides more torque than conventional batteries.  Kinetic Green will bear the cost of each auto, that is approximately Rs.1.80 lakh, while the coordination committee of autorickshaw unions will bear their operational and maintenance expense. The per km expense on electricity will be around 30 paise.
