Scientists from California Institute of Technology have developed the world’s fastest camera, T-CUP (Compressed Ultrafast Photography), which can capture 10 trillion frames per second. The speed makes it possible to freeze time to see light in extremely slow motion. The advance may offer insight into as-yet undetectable secrets of the interactions between light and matter, say scientists.
The camera set the world record for real-time imaging speed. It can power a new generation of microscopes for biomedical, materials science, and other applications. The first time it was used, the ultrafast camera broke new ground by capturing the temporal focusing of a single femtosecond laser pulse in real time.
