Laboratory of Conservation of Endangered Species (LaCONES) developed a universal DNA based marker for identification of wild animals from parts and remains.

The Forest Department of Karnataka is to launch a Green Mysuru drive on 15th August 2018 under Hasiru Karnataka programme. The aim is to increase the tree cover of the city and the district. The program involves planting saplings in vacant spaces of government offices and schools, available space on the roadside, embankment abutting farmland and agricultural fields, courtyards etc.  The drive considers the participation public as its key success of the programme. A total of 100,000 saplings have been prepared in various nurseries of the Forest Department.  In the year 2018-19, the Forest Department has distributed around 22.21 lakh saplings and 17.18 lakh tree guards to the public. As per the National Forest Policy, at least 33% of the land area should be under green cover wherein Karnataka has the green cover of 22.56%.

India will participate for the first time in the joint SCO Peace Mission Exercise, a part of Shanghai Cooperation Organization (SCO) initiatives, being conducted by Central Military Commission of Russia from August 22-29 at Chebarkul. India became a full member of the SCO in June 2017. The Shanghai Cooperation Organization (SCO) is an eight-member multilateral organization, established on 15 June 2001 in Shanghai, China. 8 members of SCO are:- China, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Russia, Tajikistan, Uzbekistan, India and Pakistan.

Scientists found that the marine reefs could survive global warming as the combination of coral reefs and the mutualistic micro-algae withstood various climate change events since the Mesozoic era. The micro-algae, commonly called zooxanthellae, lives inside the cells of coral reefs. It allows them to acquire energy from sunlight and to build the massive, economically valuable reef formations upon which countless marine organisms rely for habitat. After conducting genetic tests and classical morphological techniques they observed that the algae family is far more diverse and comprises of 15 genera. The fossil record shows that the corals are 160 million years old.

The survey, which covered 152 brands across 11 categories, is based on data collected online by YouGov Omnibus among 1,193 respondents in the country.

England fast bowler James Anderson (36-year-old) became the first bowler to take 100 Test wickets at the iconic Lord's Cricket Ground when he dismissed India opener Murali Vijay on day four of the second Test in the ongoing five-match Test series against India. Sri Lankan off-spinner Muttiah Muralitharan, is the only other bowler to capture 100 wickets at a single venue.

The Southern Naval Command (SNC) launched 'Operation Madad' for assisting the Kerala administration and undertaking disaster relief operations due to the unprecedented flooding experienced in many parts of Kerala. All the five gates of the Idukki (Cherurhoni) Dam in Kerala have been opened for the first time in 26 years, due to heavy rain and flooding. The Idukki Dam system is constructed across the river Periyar.

The Comptroller and Auditor-General (CAG) observed that there are no facilities available for training the Navy crew on various aspects of damage control and firefighting in a submarine.  CAG submitted a report in Parliament saying the government has not approved the proposal submitted by Submarine headquarters in April 2014 yet. The proposal indicated the necessary requirement of a simulator to train in damage control and firefighting, which are assumed with greater importance as India to set to acquire nuclear submarines into its fleet. Currently, the Navy is in the process of buying two deep submergence rescue vessel systems from a U.K.-based firm.  The report also highlighted delays in the completion of the Naval Academy Project at Ezhimala, non-availability of training equipment for new induction platforms, a deficiency in the quality of training and other issues.

The China National Petroleum Corporation (CNPC), the world’s third-largest oil and gas firm, is likely to expand its stake in an Iranian gas field.  CNPC has replaced Total, the French energy giant, in the South Pars, world’s single largest natural gas field, Phase 11 project. In the project 2017, Total acquired a 50.1%, CNPC held a 30% stake and the rest was allocated to Iran’s Petropars Ltd. Meantime, Washington, U.S. demanded both Total and CNPC to scrap their businesses from Iran. Following the U.S. framework, Total apparently withdrew from the project. The option lies with Chinese firm the to take over Total’s stake if it left Iran. Chinese Foreign Ministry opposed to “unilateral sanctions” imposed by the U.S. against Iran and it is likely to expand its stake in an Iranian gas field.

The government has recently approved for the redevelopment of Nauroji Nagar project. An analysis by environmental activists and researchers says there is plagiarism in a few portions of the approved Environmental Impact Assessment (EIA) plan. EIA is used to obtain permission for the redevelopment of Nauroji Nagar. The Nauroji Nagar project was one among the projects that are awarded to National Buildings Construction Corporation (NBCC), a public sector company. The aim of the project was to set up residential and commercial buildings over 571 acres in south Delhi.
