Of total 111 cities ranked under the 'Ease of Living Index 2018' which was released by Union Minister Hardeep Singh Puri, Pune has been ranked first while Navi Mumbai has surfaced as the second preferred spot in terms of 'liveability'. Top 10 cities in 'Ease of Living Index' 2018 list are: ♦ 1- Pune; ♦ 2- Navi Mumbai; ♦ 3- Greater Mumbai; ♦ 4- Tirupati; ♦ 5- Chandigarh; ♦ 6- Thane; ♦ 7- Raipur; ♦ 8- Indore; ♦ 9- Vijaywada; ♦ 10- Bhopal.

Lionel Messi has succeeded Andres Iniesta as captain of Barcelona, after the Spaniard ended his 22-year stay at the club to join Japanese side Vissel Kobe in May. Sergio Busquets will be the vice-captain, with Gerard Pique and Sergi Roberto the third and fourth captains respectively. Messi, 31, joined the Barcelona club in 2001 and is their record goalscorer.

Indian skipper Virat Kohli claimed the top spot in the list of highest run scorers in International Cricket 2018. Jonny Bairstow, the England wicket-keeper batsman, stepped down to the second spot.  Virat Kohli has scored 509 runs in Test cricket, 146 in T20Is and 749 in ODs. The total sum of the runs tallies up to 1404 runs in 25 innings. Shikhar Dhawan is the second Indian in the list with 1055 runs.

The board of the India Cements Ltd. has recruited Basavaraju, Lakshmi Aparna Sreekumar and Sandhya Rajan as additional independent directors in the board. The appointment is based on the recommendation of the nomination and remuneration committee as Arun Datta, N.R. Krishnan and V. Manickam will be retiring on August 28.  N. Srinivasan, a well-known Chartered Accountant, has also been appointed as an additional non-executive, non-independent director. His appointment will be in effect from August 29.

In a cleanliness report released by the Ministry of Railways, Jodhpur and Jaipur of North Western Railway in Rajasthan captured the first two spots in the A1 Category stations. Tirupati, an important site for religious tourism and in South Central Railway, ranked third. Rajasthan's Marwar topped among the A Category railway stations, followed by Phulera and Warangal. There are over 8,000 stations on the Indian Railway network and they are classified into seven categories: A-1, A, B, C, D, E and F based on their annual passenger revenue.

Researchers have found that Aspirin which is an affordable and globally available drug could help prevent HIV transmission. They tested the effect of acetylsalicylic acid or aspirin and other anti-inflammatory drugs on HIV target cells. It showed that Aspirin was the most effective as it reduced the number of HIV target cells.  Researches are being done whether Aspirin can reduce the level of target cells will actually prevent HIV infections. If the research turns out as expected then it could be a strategy for HIV prevention which is not only inexpensive but easily accessed globally.

Indian Institute of Technology (IIT), Bombay will get this financial aid under the status of Institution of Eminence (IoE). Prime Minister Modi also inaugurated the new building of the Department of Energy Science and Engineering and Centre for Environmental Science and Engineering at IIT Bombay. He stated that, in the last four years, seven IITs, seven IIMs (Indian Institute of Management), two IISER (Indian Institutes of Science Education and Research) and 11 IIITs (Indian Institute of Information Technology) have been approved.

On 15th of August in 1947, India got freedom from the British rule after long years of slavery. President of India gives a speech every year in order to 'Address to the Nation' on the evening of a day before the Independence Day. On 15th August, the Prime Minister of India hoists the Indian flag on the Red Fort, Delhi. After the flag hoisting, National Anthem song is sung and twenty-one gun shots are fired to salute and honour the Indian flag and solemn occasion. What does the three colours of the Indian National Flag signify? ♦ Saffron refers to the strength and courage of the country; ♦ White signifies peace and truth. ♦ Green color is symbolic of the fertility of the land. The tricolour flag was adapted as the Indian National Flag on July 22, 1947. Jawaharlal Nehru, the first Prime Minister of independent India is also the longest reigning Prime Minister of the country with 16 years and 286 days at the office.

Pakistan’s 329 newly-elected members, including Imran Khan, of the National Assembly took the oath on 13th August. Imran Khan is all set to form the next government, only the second democratic transition of power in the country. Speaker Ayaz Sadiq administered the oath to the leaders in the 342-member house. Imran Khan and other prominent leaders including Shahbaz Sharif, Bilawal Bhutto-Zardari and former President Asif Ali Zardari also took the oath. The maiden session of the 15th National Assembly, the lower house of Parliament, happened after the swearing of the members. The PTI’s final tally reached 158 after it was allotted 28 out of 60 seats reserved for women and 10 seats reserved for minorities.

Forest department has installed barbed wire fencing for its plantation projects causing a threat to movement of wildlife, especially elephants. The Wildlife Society of Orissa (WSO), an environmental pressure group, has expressed its concern by suggesting the Forest department to use green fences comprising bamboo and Amari (Ipomoea Carnea) instead of the artificial barricades like barbed wire fence or stone rubble walls.  The barbed wire fence remains a threat to wild animals as there is a high chance of the animals to get stuck or seriously injured if they run into them while being chased by predators or hunters. WSO activists protested against the proposed rubble wall of over several kilometres for around 100 hectares of plantation project site near Pangatira village, Mahabirod range, Dhenkanal as this area is an ideal elephant habitat. This long and high stone wall shall block elephant movement lead to increase conflict between man and elephant.
