What is the Eligibility and Documents Required to avail American Express Bank Credit Cards?

ELIGIBILITY: The card is offered to the customers whose profile match the eligibility standards prescribed by the bank. The bank has set the criteria according to which the eligibility of the customer is evaluated. There are certain factors or criteria specified by banks which needs to be satisfied before credit card applications are approved.

  • Applicant will have to be above the age of 18.
  • Applicant must not have any payment defaults and should have a good credit history.
  • The annual income of the applicant will have to be above Rs.6 lakh per annum, however this will vary based on the said credit card.
  • In case the applicant is self-employed, the company must be in business for a minimum of 18 months. However if the said applicant already has an American Express credit card, the company will have to be in business for minimum of 12 months.

  • Recent salary slips, Income Tax Returns and Form 16

How to Apply for American Express Bank Credit Card?

The first and foremost thing to do while applying for a credit card is to choose the one that suits your credit profile. To apply for a credit card, you can either apply online or in the manual way.



Online method: Like American Express, every bank has an online portal. You can visit the official website of the bank and provide details such as name, income, employment and upload few documents to apply for a credit card. The bank will process your application and approve your credit card, once the application submission is over. The applicants also track the credit card application online and offline.

Offline Method: You can visit the bank, fill in the application and submit it along with the relevant documents. Generally, it can take up to 15 days for your application to be processed and approved/rejected.

#1. American Express Bank Bank Credit Card Bill Payment

Paying an American Express credit card bill is no more a hassle with a variety of online and offline solutions offered by American Express. Card holders can choose any method of their choice of payment that is suited for them and then pay their outstanding bills before the due date.

  • Online Funds transfer – NEFT: American Express credit card customers can settle their outstanding credit card bills using the NEFT process within one working day. First, you have to login to their online banking accounts and register their Amex credit card as a payee. The mentioned details have to be entered while registering the payee - Payee name, payee account number, bank name, payee account type, IFSC code and the branch address. Credit card users have to make the NEFT transfer before 3 pm on weekdays and before 10 am on weekends, if the payment has to be made by the next day.
  • Online Payments: American Express credit card bills can be paid online from a customer’s bank account from anywhere around the global. The online payment service from American Express includes more than 50 banks within India. Payments done using this service will be credited to the American Express credit card account in two or three business days.
  • ECS / Direct Debits: To make credit card bill payments, customers can also use the Recurring Direct Debit service offered by American Express. Customers can register for this service by submitting the filled-in Credit Card - Direct Debit enrolment form. The minimum amount due or the total amount due, as requested by the customer will be debited from the bank account through the Electronic Clearing Service, on a monthly basis.
  • Drop Boxes: American Express card holders can find the nearest drop box located in their area and deposit a cheque or a draft to pay their outstanding credit card bills.
  • Post or Courier: Customers can also send cheques or drafts drawn in favour of an American Express branch. The bank has to receive the cheque or draft four working days before the due date. This has to be done to avoid late payment charges. In case the draft or cheque is sent through a courier then it must reach the American Express Banking Corp office in Gurgaon. If the draft or cheque is sent via post then it must reach the American Express Banking Corp office in New Delhi.

#2. American Express Bank Credit Card Net Banking

For existing American Express customers with a net banking account: If you are an existing American Express credit cardholder and already has a net banking account on the bank's portal, you can register your card easily through the portal. All you have to do is log into the bank’s portal, by typing https://global.americanexpress.com and fill in your User ID and password on the homepage after selecting the option of "Cards-My Account" from the drop-down box. Since you are creating an online account for your American Express credit card, you will need to select the option of “Create New online Account” and then follow the steps listed below:

  • Once you log in, you will be directed to a page that contains different tabs. You will need to click on the first tab that says, "Verification". Under the “Verification” tab, you will need to enter your 15-digit card number and 4-digit card ID and click on “Continue.”

  • On the next tab that says, “Account Preferences”, you will be able to make customizations according to your needs.

  • The third and the last tab is called, "Card Benefits." Under this tab, you will get a detailed explanation about the benefits that comes along with their credit card. Once you finish going through the details listed under this tab, you can click on “Continue” and finish the registration process.

For existing American Express credit cardholders without a net banking account: If an individual is an existing American Express credit cardholder but they don't have a net banking account, they will need to register for an online account initially to register their credit card. They can register for a net banking account by visiting the nearby branch of American Express, using phone banking, or by stepping into an American Express ATM.

For new customers of American Express: Even if the credit cardholder doesn’t have a savings account with American Express, they can set up a net banking account for their card to enjoy every kind of credit card-related services. They can follow the steps mentioned below to set up a credit card net banking account:

  • Log on to global.americanexpress.com. On the homepage, you will be asked to fill in their 15-digit credit card number and the 4-digit card ID and submit.

  • Once you submit the above-mentioned details, you will be redirected to the “Set Up” page, on which the individual can customize the kind of services you want to have access to through this online credit card net banking portal.

  • On the third and the last page, you will need to go through the details again, confirm them, and submit them to finish the registration process.

#3. American Express Bank Credit Card Status

The application status can be checked easily through online. An alternate way of checking American Express Bank credit card application status can be done by contacting the customer care. Since that is a little painful process for most of the customers, American Express Bank has made it tension free by allowing the customers to check it through online. The user has to visit the official portal of American Express Bank. The status can be checked using the following:

  1. The credit card application reference number and application form number: You can visit the official website of the bank. Go to the credit cards section of the bank. By providing details of your application reference number, application form number, mobile number or date of birth, the progress of your credit card can be viewed.

  2. Through Mobile number: You need to visit the official website of American Express Bank and go the credit cards section. Enter the mobile number that you registered for credit card application. The mobile number will be verified mostly with an OTP. Following the verification, you can see the status of your credit card application.

  3. Through AirWay Bill number: Once the card is approved, the applicant will receive a letter with the AirWay bill number of the shipment carrying the credit card. You can track your credit card status by using the AirWay bill number. You can go to the official website of American Express Bank and select ‘Track your credit card’. You will now be redirected to another page where you will have to enter your AirWay bill number. You can track your credit card location and information on when it will reach you, once the number is verified.
