UPSC 2018 Civil Services - Prelims Exam Pattern

The UPSC Preliminary Examination of Civil Services Examination consists of two compulsory papers (Paper I - General Studies, Paper II - Aptitude) with 200 marks each. All the questions under these Papers are the Objective type (multiple choice questions). Exert the detailed UPSC Exam Pattern now.

Marks obtained in General Studies Paper I of UPSC CSE Prelims Exam is considered for shortlisting to Mains Exam. In General Studies paper II, candidates compulsorily score minimum qualifying marks i.e. 66 marks which is 33% of 200 marks.

UPSC 2018 Civil Services - Mains Exam Pattern

UPSC Mains Examination consists of nine papers, out of which two are qualifying papers (Indian Language Paper, English Paper) each of 300 marks and seven are compulsory papers to be counted for merit each of 250 marks.

UPSC 2018 Syllabus for Civil Services - Prelims Exam

UPSC CSE Preliminary Exam syllabus is mainly formulated to assess the candidate's awareness and Knowledge about current affairs and aptitude, also to judge the answering skill within the stipulated time. Detailed Syllabus for each paper of UPSC CSE Prelims exam is granted below.

General Studies Paper I Syllabus:

  • Current events of national and international importance
  •  History of India and Indian national movement
  • Indian and World Geography - Physical, Social, Economic Geography of India and the world
  • Indian Polity and Governance - Constitution, Political system, Panchayati Raj, Public Policy, Rights issues, etc.
  • Economic and Social development - Sustainable development, Poverty, Inclusion, Demographics, Social Sector Initiatives etc.
  • General issues on environmental ecology, Bio-diversity and Climate change - that donot require subject specialization
  • General science.

General Studies Paper II - Aptitude Syllabus:

  • Comprehension

  • Basic numeracy (numbers and their relations, orders of magnitude etc.) (Class X level),

UPSC 2018 Syllabus for Civil Services - Mains Exam

The major purpose of UPSC IAS Main Examination is to assess the overall intellectual traits and depth of understanding of candidates. Questions under General Studies are asked in the level such that a well educated person can able to answer without any specialized study. These papers are to test Candidate's General awareness on various subjects, basic understanding of several issues, analyzing ability and more which are relevant for a career in Civil Services. The standard of the syllabus of General Studies papers are of degree level. The standard of the syllabus of optional paper is higher than the bachelor's degree but lower than the master's level. In the case of Engineering, Medical Science and Law, the Syllabus Level corresponds to the bachelor's degree.

Syllabus for UPSC Mains Exam - Qualifying Paper A - Indian Languages

Questions under the Paper on Indian Languages will be of Matriculation or equivalent standard and will be of qualifying nature only. The marks obtained in these papers will not be counted for final ranking. Questions on this paper are of the following pattern:

In this paper, Candidates have to write essays on multiple topics given. They will be expected to keep close to the subject of the essay to arrange their ideas in orderly fashion and to write concisely. Credit will be given for effective and exact expression. They have to express the central idea of the topic clearly.

  • Indian culture will cover the salient aspects of Art Forms, Literature and Architecture from ancient to modern times.
  • Modern Indian history from about the middle of the eighteenth century until the present- significant events, personalities, issues
  • The Freedom Struggle - its various stages and important contributors /contributions from different parts of the country.
  • Post-independence consolidation and reorganization within the country.
  • History of the world will include events from 18th century such as industrial revolution, world wars, redrawing of national boundaries, colonization, decolonization, political philosophies like communism, capitalism, socialism etc.- their forms and effect on the society.
  • Salient features of Indian Society, Diversity of India.
  • Role of women and women's organization, population and associated issues, poverty and developmental issues, urbanization, their problems and their remedies.
  • Effects of globalization on Indian society
  • Social empowerment, communalism, regionalism & secularism.
  • Salient features of world's physical geography.
  • Distribution of key natural resources across the world (including South Asia and the Indian sub-continent); factors responsible for the location of primary, secondary, and tertiary sector industries in various parts of the world (including India)
  • Important Geophysical phenomena such as earthquakes, Tsunami, Volcanic activity, cyclone etc., geographical features and their location- changes in critical geographical features (including water-bodies and ice-caps) and in flora and fauna and the effects of such changes.

Governance, Constitution, Polity, Social Justice and International relations
  • Indian Constitution- historical underpinnings, evolution, features, amendments, significant provisions and basic structure.
  • Functions and responsibilities of the Union and the States, issues, and challenges pertaining to the federal structure, devolution of powers and finances up to local levels and challenges therein.
  • Separation of powers between various organs disputes redressal mechanisms and institutions.
  • Comparison of the Indian constitutional scheme with that of other countries
  • Parliament and State Legislatures - structure, functioning, the conduct of business, powers & privileges and issues arising out of these.
  • Structure, organization, and functioning of the Executive and the Judiciary Ministries and Departments of the Government; pressure groups and formal/informal associations and their role in the Polity.
  • Salient features of the Representation of People's Act.

Ethics, Integrity, and Aptitude
This paper will include questions to test the candidate's attitude and approach to issues relating to integrity, probity in public life and his problem-solving approach to various issues and conflicts faced by him in dealing with society. Questions may utilize the case study approach to determine these aspects. The following broad areas will be covered.
  • Ethics and Human Interface: Essence, determinants, and consequences of Ethics in human actions; dimensions of ethics; ethics in private and public relationships.
Human Values - lessons from the lives and teachings of great leaders, reformers and administrators; the role of family, society and educational institutions in inculcating values.
