Eligibility Criteria for UPSC Civil Services Exam

Nationality - For the Indian Administrative Service (IAS) and the Indian Police Service (IPS), a candidate must be a citizen of India.
Age Limits: Minimum Age Limit - 21 years; Maximum Age Limit - 30 Yrs (relaxable to 5 years for SC/ ST and 3 years for OBC Candidates)
Minimum Educational Qualifications -Graduation or Degree in any discipline from any recognized university in India. Candidates of Final Year can also apply for UPSC Civil Services Exam.

Number of attempts permitted for UPSC Civil Services Exam

  • For General category candidates - 6 Attempts
  • For OBC category candidates - 9 Attempts
  • For SC/ ST Candidates - No restriction on the number of attempts (till 37 years of age).

UPSC Engineering Services Examination (ESE)

UPSC Engineering Services Examination (ESE) is conducted for engineering positions in various departments of the central government. Posts in 1) Civil Engineering, 2) Mechanical Engineering, 3) Electrical Engineering, 4) Electronics & Telecommunication Engineering categories would be filled through this UPSC ESE examination.

Eligibility Criteria for Engineering Services Examination (ESE)

Nationality - A candidate must be a citizen of India / Nepal/ Bhutan or Tibetan refugee or a person of Indian origin.
Age Limits: Minimum Age Limit - 21 years; Maximum Age Limit - 30 Yrs (relaxable to 5 years for SC/ ST and 3 years for OBC Candidates)
Minimum Educational Qualifications - A Bachelor’s degree in Engineering (B.E. / B. Tech) from a recognised university or equivalent. M.Sc degree or its equivalent.

UPSC Engineering Services Exam Pattern

  • Stage 1:- Preliminary examination consisting of two objective type (multiple choices) questions papers; carrying a maximum of 500 marks (Paper 1 – 200 Marks & Paper II – 300 Marks). 
  • Stage 2:- Main examination consist two conventional type papers in Engineering Discipline specific with duration of three hours and maximum marks of 600 (300 Marks in each paper). 
  • Stage 3:- Personality Test (interview) carrying 200 Marks.

UPSC Combined Medical Services Examination (CMSE)

UPSC Combined Medical Services Examination (CMSE) is conducted for Medical Officer positions in various organizations such as the Indian Ordnance Factories, Indian Railways functioning under the Government of India.

Eligibility Criteria for Combined Medical Services Examination

Nationality - A candidate must be a citizen of India / Nepal/ Bhutan or Tibetan refugee or a person of Indian origin.
Age Limits: Maximum Age Limit - 32 Yrs (relaxable to 5 years for SC/ ST and 3 years for OBC Candidates)

UPSC Conducts "Combined Defence Services" (CDS) Examination twice a year for recruiting only Unmarried Graduates into the Indian Military Academy, Indian Naval Academy Indian Air Force Academy and Officers Training Academy.

Eligibility Criteria for UPSC Combined Defence Services Exam

Nationality - A candidate must be a citizen of India / Nepal/ Bhutan or Tibetan refugee or a person of Indian origin.
Age Limits: Minimum Age Limit - 19 years; Maximum Age Limit - 24 Yrs (25 Years for Officers’ Training Academy). For Indian Military Academy, Indian Naval Academy - only Unmarried male candidates are eligible.
Minimum Educational Qualifications - (i) For Indian Military Academy and Officers' Training Academy - Degree of a recognised University or equivalent.
(ii) For Indian Naval Academy - Degree in Engineering from a recognised University/ Institution.
(iii) For Air Force Academy - Degree of a recognised University (with Physics and Mathematics at 10, +2 level) or Bachelor of Engineering.

The papers in all the subjects will consist of objective type questions only. The question papers (Test Booklets) of General Knowledge and Elementary Mathematics will be set bilingually in Hindi as well as English. Candidates successful in the written exam are then called for an interview by a Services Selection Board which evaluates a candidate's suitability for a career in the Indian Armed Forces.

UPSC National Defence Academy (NDA) Examination & Naval Academy Examination

National Defence Academy (NDA) is the first tri-service academy in the world. NDA is a Military Academy in India which trains cadets of three Services namely Indian Army, Indian Navy and Indian Air Force (these three are combinedly called Indian Armed Forces). UPSC Conducts "National Defence Academy" (NDA) Examination & Naval Academy Examination twice a year for recruiting only Unmarried Male candidates those who wish to join Army, Navy and Air Force wings of the NDA and for Indian Naval Academy Course.

Eligibility Criteria for NDA & Naval Academy Examination

Nationality - A candidate must be a citizen of India / Nepal/ Bhutan or Tibetan refugee or a person of Indian origin.
Age Limits: Minimum Age Limit - 16 years; Maximum Age Limit - 19 Yrs (No Age Relaxation)
Marital Status - Unmarried; Only Male candidates are eligible to take this exam.
Minimum Educational Qualifications - (i) For Army Wing of National Defence Academy :- 12th Class pass of the 10+2 pattern of School Education or equivalent examination conducted by a State Education Board or a University. 
(ii) For Air Force and Naval Wings of National Defence Academy and for the 10+2 Cadet Entry Scheme at the Indian Naval Academy :- 12th Class pass of the 10+2 pattern of School Education or equivalent with Physics and Mathematics conducted by a State Education Board or a University.

  • Stage-I: Psychological Aptitude Test
