Railway Exam - OverviewIndian Railways owned and operated by Govt. of India through Ministry of Railways is the fourth largest railway network in the world. The staffs of Indian Railways are recruited under two categories i.e. gazetted (Group A and B) and non-gazetted (Group C and D) employees. Railway Recruitment Board does recruitment of Group B, C, and D through 21 Railway Recruitment Boards across India. Few posts of Group B are done through direct promotion from Group C. Railway Exam - Recruitment of Various Posts
Group AGroup A Officer positions are filled in by UPSC Exams. UPSC Civil Services and Combined Engineering Services are conducted for the recruitment in posts of Indian Railway Traffic Service (IRTS), Indian Railways Accounts Service (IRAS), Indian Railway Service of Engineers (IRSE), Indian Railway Service of Electrical Engineers (IRSEE), Indian Railway Services of Signal Engineers (IRSSE), and Indian Railway Store Service (IRSS).
Group BThe posts of Group B are filled in by direct promotion from Group C. For some posts, the Exams are conducted by Railway Recruitment Board.
Group C and DThe recruitment for Group C and D is done via RRB under 21 Railway Recruitment Boards under the supervision of Railway Recruitment Control Board. The posts are divided into technical cadre and non-technical cadre. Recruitment is done on All India basis and the competition is not restricted to one particular zone and only the eligibility of the candidate is necessary for taking up the Exam under any zone. Since recruitment in done on larger scale, it is done under 21 RRBs.
- Posts for which recruitment is done Group C are RRB NTPC (Non-Technical Popular Category), RRB Technical Cadre and RPF Sub-Inspectors/Constables.
- The recruitment of Trackman, Porter, Helper-II (Mech), Helper-II (S&T), Gr.D Engg., Helper-II (Elect), Gr. D (Store) are done through Group D recruitment.
Railway Exam - Group C - NTPC
Railway Recruitment Board conducts Group C Exams for recruitment of various posts in Indian Railways. The Opening/vacancy details are given zonal wise and recruitment is done on Zonal basis. Vacancies are made based on the requirement in each zone. The posts of Group C are

Railway Exam - Group C - NTPC - Overall Exam Pattern
Group C posts for Non-Technical Popular Category (NTPC) follows different pattern based on the necessary skill set required for each post. Basically, Every post will be having Two-Stage Computer based test. Typing skill set will be required for few posts and for few other posts Aptitude test is conducted before proceeding with document verification. Railway Exam - Group C - NTPC - Current Recruitment
Indian Railways has released a large number of vacancies for the Group C NTPC cadre and the recruitment process is on the go. The vacancies were given based on zone/region and the exam was also conducted for different posts under the respective regions specified/opted by the candidate. The 1st Stage Exam (CBT) was conducted from March to May 2016. The 2nd Stage CBT was conducted in the month of January 2017. Following which Typing Skill Test and Aptitude Test were conducted on June 29, 2017, and June 30, 2017, respectively. Based on the results published, the document verification for the shortlisted candidates has started from August 28, 2017.
Railway Exam - Assistant Loco PilotApart from NTPC in Group C, the Assistant Loco Pilot posts also come under Group C and the recruitment for this post is done separately. The post of Assistant Loco Pilot has a huge responsibility of transporting millions of passengers and tons of freight every day. Thus, recruitment for this post will have tests to check the required skill set and to recruit highly efficient candidates. Few required skill set are given below

Railway Exam Group C - Technical Post

Basic qualification would be on engineering standards on Civil, Technical, and Mechanical engineering and also other similar disciplines with respect to the post.
Age group between 18 years and 27 years
Exam Syllabus and Pattern
The Exam syllabus for Technical cadre will be in line with educational standards and the post applied for. The Written Exam will be done based on following divisions.
- General English
- General Arithmetic
- Analytical and Quantitative Aptitude
- General Knowledge
- Questions based on educational/technical qualification related to the post.
Railway Exam Group C - RPF Sub-Inspector/ConstablesThe posts in RPF Sub-Inspector/Constables of Group C will basically have two divisions i.e. Executive Branch and Fire Service Branch. The Exam Pattern and selection procedure will be different for Sub-inspector and Constables.
Constables: Between 18 to 25 years
Exam Syllabus and PatternSub-Inspectors in Executive and Fire Service: The selection for these posts will be a three-stage process where physical fitness as the main key. The three stages are
- Physical Fitness
- Preliminary Efficiency Test
- Written Test
- General Knowledge: 100 marks (1 hour); Objective type questions on past/current affairs, History, Geography, Hindi, Mathematics, and Science
- General English: 50 marks (1 hour); Questions on Grammar, Precise Writing, Correction of Sentences, Annotation of selected Paragraphs/Poems and more.
- Essay Writing: 50 marks (1 hour); Essay on English/Hindi in 300 words.
- Physical Efficiency Test
- Written Test
- Viva Voice/Interview
Candidates clearing the physical fitness will be called in for Written test and candidates clearing Written test will be called in for Interview. Final selection is made upon candidate being medically fit after the medical examination is done.

Railway Exam - Zones
