GATE Exam Pattern - Overview

GATE - Graduate Aptitude Test in Engineering Examination is conducted in online mode only. GATE Exam Pattern granted in this page gives the clear structure of GATE Examination. Graduate Aptitude Test in Engineering (GATE) is an All-India Examination for undergraduate Students in Engineering/ Technology/ Architecture to test basic technical knowledge. GATE exam is jointly conducted by the Indian Institute of Science (IISc) and seven Indian Institutes of Technology (IITs at Bombay, Delhi, Guwahati, Kanpur, Kharagpur, Madras and Roorkee) on a rotation basis. GATE 2018 Exam will be conducted by IIT Guwahati on February 03, 04, 10 & 11, 2018 (Saturdays & Sundays).

(iii) There is NO negative marking for numerical answer type questions.

GATE Exam Pattern for all papers

ONLINE Computer Based Test (CBT) is conducted for all 23 papers in GATE Examination. GATE examination comprises of a single paper of 65 questions carrying 100 marks in total. Total time duration for the entire GATE exam is 3 hrs (90 mins). Each Paper comprises questions from 2 main sections namely,
  1. General Aptitude - 15 marks
  2. Technical (along with Engineering Mathematics for certain papers which are mentioned below) - 85 marks
General Aptitude (GA) Test is common to all 23 papers. There are one mark and 2 marks questions in each section of all GATE Papers.

  • GATE XE Paper comprises one compulsory section, Section A - Engineering Mathematics.
  • Section A has 11 questions carrying 15 marks in total as shown in table below. Both multiple choice questions and numerical type questions will be asked in this section.
  • Apart from Section A, the candidate has to pick any two of remaining XE sections B to H.
  • Each of these sections (B through H) comprises 22 questions carrying a total of 35 marks each.

  • Apart from Section P, the candidate has to pick any two of remaining XL sections Q to U.
  • Each of these sections (Q through U) comprises 20 questions carrying a total of 30 marks each.

GATE Exam Pattern - Distribution of questions

In the papers bearing the codes AE, AG, BT, CE, CH, CS, EC, EE, IN, ME, MN, MT, PI, TF and XE, the Engineering Mathematics will carry around 15% of the total marks, the General Aptitude section will carry 15% of the total marks and the remaining 70% of the total marks is devoted to the subject of the GATE paper.

GATE Exam Pattern - Types of questions asked:

The online examination GATE paper will contain two types of questions:-
1) Numerical Answer Type Questions:- There are some Numerical Answer type questions for which numerical answers must be keyed in by the candidate using the virtual keypad.
  • A Numeric Answer question carries 1 mark and 2 marks in all sections.
  • No negative marking for these questions.
2) Rest of the questions shall be of Multiple Choice Question (MCQ) type. For these type of questions, you have to choose the answer from the given choices.
  • A Multiple Choice question carries 1 mark and 2 marks in all sections.
  • There is negative marking for these questions.

Negative Marking in GATE

The negative marking will be applied for wrongly answered questions by candidates in GATE exam. If any question is left blank i.e., without marking any answer, there is no negative marking for that question. The negative marking scheme is mentioned below:
